I try to relax in the warm water and close my eyes. The tears trickle down my cheek and I’m not sure if they are tears of self-pity or anger. Is Adam right, am I putting myself under too much stress? Is the strain of wanting a baby taking its toll on me? Maybe I should phone Doctor Kingsley in the morning. I wipe the tears from my cheek and reach out for the sponge. The smell of lavender oil helps to soothe me and when Adam taps softly on the door I’m feeling calmer than earlier. He’s changed into jeans and a sweatshirt and carries a mug of tea.

‘I thought you might want a cuppa,’ he smiles.

‘Thanks.’

He sits on the side of the bath.

‘What happened to your foot?’ he asks, reaching down and touching it gently.

‘I twisted it when I was out walking today.’

I decide not to tell him about the cemetery.

‘Adam, I’m not losing my mind.’

He strokes my hair.

‘I’m not for one minute saying you are, but wielding kitchen knives is not your usual behaviour is it?’

‘I just …’

‘I’ve closed the cellar window. I don’t know how that got open. Can you ask Seth? Maybe he opened it when he fixed the cellar door. I don’t want you leaving the house with windows open or doors unlocked. I’m not saying it is you but security is important. Can you be sure to check whenever you go out?’

‘I do check.’

‘I know you do.’

‘Did you move the perfume?’

‘I don’t even remember seeing any perfume.’

‘It was on the kitchen counter, Cat found …’ I say, but am interrupted by the gate buzzer.

‘Maybe Jan threw it away,’ he says getting up. ‘Are you sure you didn’t put it back in the bedroom?’

‘No … I … It’s that rose smell. Don’t you remember?’

‘Flo, you’re getting anxious again.’

‘Sorry.’

‘That’ll be Laurie. See you in a bit,’ he says hurrying out of the bathroom.

I climb carefully from the bath and study my foot. The swelling has gone down a bit but the last thing I’m in the mood for is company.
